Storytime w/ Brianne Farley: Worm Makes a Sandwich
Our friend, author and illustrator Brianne Farley will be hanging out at Farm Club during our annual plant sale. Brianne will be reading her book Worm Makes a Sandwich, a funny picture book about composting and gardening told from the perspective of one very eager worm.
Storytime starts at 12:30, with crafts and book signing available from 12:00-1:300pm.
About the book:
A sweetly humorous picture book about composting, told from the point of view of a worm. Meet Worm. He might be little. He might have no hands. But Worm would love to make a sandwich, just for you! To get started he'll need just one thing: garbage! Delicious, delectable garbage like apple cores and mushy grapes, broccoli bottoms and carrot tops, sad celery, and drippy cucumbers. Worm and his friends eat the garbage. And then they do what everyone does after they eat garbage. They poop! The poop goes in the compost and the compost goes in your garden, which is where the vegetables for your sandwich come from!
Simple, right? Worm thought you'd agree. He might just need a bit of assistance along the way.
This hilarious, engaging picture book is the perfect introduction to the process of composting from start to finish, told from the perspective of one little worm who is very eager to help.
Brianne Farley (she/her) is an author and illustrator of picture books including Ike's Incredible Ink and Secret Tree Fort. She lives in Traverse City, Michigan with her husband, son, dog, a small vegetable garden, and all the worms in the compost pile out back.

For the Love of Lager
For the Love of Lager month has returned for another year of delicious beers. The slower winter season allows our lagers some extra cold maturation time, adding polish and roundness beyond what you get with a typical 6-8 week Lager production schedule.
Historically, Lagers were brewed in the winter - when the low temps favored ideal lager yeast fermentation and cold conditioning. While achieving fermentation & conditioning temperatures in the age of mechanical refrigeration is not an issue, nevertheless there’s a seasonality to Lager brewing at Farm Club.
To celebrate these special beers, we’ll be offering $14 flights (sampling 6 Lagers)
10° Czech Pale Lager- Bohemian style Pilsner brewed with Czech malt and Saaz hops, 4.5% abv
13° Czech Dark Lager- Bohemian style dark lager brewed with Czech malt and Saaz hops, 4.5% abv
Pilsner- Snappy German style pale lager brewed with Hallertau Mittelfruh and Saphir hops, 4.9% abv
Spring Pilsner- German style pale lager brewed with US Styrian and Lórien hops. 4.9% abv
Pre-Prohibition Pils- Pale lager brewed with nixtamalized corn, 4.9% abv
West Coast Pilsner- Hoppy lager brewed with Cascade and Lórien hops, 4.9% abv

Cask Tapping Event with TC Beer Week
In celebration of TC Beer Week, we'll be tapping a special cask ale, our Best Bitter- an English Ale, 4.5% abv
And if you're digging cask ale, head over to Earthen Ales afterwards where they'll be tapping their small batch cask ale on Friday too. Cheers!
What is a Cask Ale?
Cask beer, also known as real ale or cask-conditioned beer, is an unfiltered, unpasteurized beer that undergoes a secondary fermentation inside the cask to naturally carbonate. It is served at a warmer, cellar-like temperature
What is a Best Bitter?
A Best Bitter (aka Special or Premium Bitter) is the middle ranked in abv of the three subcategories of English bitter; Ordinary and ESB are the others.
Some back story….
What are English Bitters? Well, first, despite the name they’re not especially bitter. One of the most popular pub styles in England, bitters are low gravity pale ales. A “proper” bitter balances rich English malt flavor with earthy and floral English hops (in much the same way that Pils & Helles are balanced beers that showcase the nuances of German malt and hops, likewise Cz Pilsner and Pale Lagers w.r.t. Czech ingredients). Balanced, low in alcohol, and traditionally served with soft carbonation, bitters are super drinkable, the original session beers.
Our Best Bitter is brewed with English Maris Otter and light crystal malts. For hops, a combination of Willamette and Crystal. You get a flash of biscuity sweetness from the malt balanced by bitterness, and floral, lemony citrus, and fruity flavors and aromatics from the hops and yeast. It’s a style not often found in the US (a maltier, more hop forward version of English ESB is the bitter most well known to American craft beer drinkers) but best bitters are totally classic and one of my favorite unheralded beer styles.
One additional thing of note about this batch:
Kegs, cans, and our cask of Best Bitter have undergone secondary fermentation to achieve its final level of carbonation. This allows us to achieve the softer carbonation appropriate for the style while enhancing shelf life (as the fermenting yeast consumes residual oxygen captured in packaging).
